Forty years ago, young mothers across the nation began joining the workforce in large numbers. This created a need for flexible, affordable, and quality care for their young children. Many moms discovered they could meet this need by providing in-home childcare
I was a young working mom in the mid-1970s. After my second child was born just 11½ months after the first, I decided to join the in-home profession of caring for other children.
I also began my childcare business before the Child and Adult Care Food Program existed. When my sister—also a licensed in-home provider—told me about a program that reimbursed providers for meals served to children, I was amazed. “Where do I sign?” was my response.
Through my experience as a working mom and licensed provider, I became deeply passionate about the Food Program. It benefits families by keeping childcare affordable and supports providers by teaching nutritious meal standards. For over 30 years, I’ve seen the positive impact this program has had on families and providers alike.
